1895 $20 Double Eagle PCGS MS65. Double Eagles of the 19th century are very popular coins for both collecting and investing. While a full set of Liberty Double Eagles from 1850 to 1907 is an extremely difficult task only taken by a very limited number of specialists, both low mintage as well as popular dates attract a lot of attention. Usually, those two factors come together to a single issue, like the extremely rare 1854-O, 1856-O and 1870-CC issues. High grade examples of those issues are virtually always impossible to find, and the best coins known very well could be circulated examples.

Some dates are popular because of the availability in higher grade. The first of such issues that comes to mind is the high-mintage 1904, usually chosen to represent the type in a high grade type set. Interestingly, some other dates of the later period are easily acquired at the gem level as well, although they might require some adequate searching. Price differences, surprisingly, are small, and good opportunity lies here for both the collector as well as the investor.

The 1895 $20 gold piece, despite its relatively large mintage of 1,114,605 pieces, is not such an issue. The majority of the coins were shipped overseas, or circulated among banks in the United States. This handling caused most coins to acquire both large and small marks, and while technically uncirculated they usually grade at the lower end of the mint state range of grades. Gems, such as the present piece, are rare, and not often encountered in correctly graded holders. As such, while this later Liberty double eagle might seem available, specialists will know that this offering is very important.

The quality of the present piece is outstanding. Full and sharply struck, with very few marks and completely original surfaces. Full, fresh and vibrant luster highlight both sides, with creamy citron-yellow golden surfaces. This coin represents a very important offering for the specialist of double eagles or late 19th century gold. PCGS has only graded two examples in this grade, with none finer. Clearly one of the finest known of this underrated date, usually encountered at the lower mint state levels.
