1899 $20 (1899 Double Eagle) PCGS MS64 CAC. Here a 1899 Double Eagle graded by PCGS as high grade. Last year of the 19th Century. Please compare the quality of this coin with every other MS-64 specimen sold at public auction. Then compare with every MS-65 specimen. Recently stickered by CAC. ( Collectors Acceptance Corp ).

Most type sets include the 1904 double eagle to represent the type three Liberty double eagle, the largest denomination struck by the Philadelphia Mint in quantities. However, because of the high intrinsic and gold value of these massive twenty dollar gold pieces, along with their popularity there are many other dates available at approximately the same price. These, however, will not be as common as the 1904 double eagle, and trade much less frequently than that common date with its huge mintage. This is a very interesting fact for the advanced type set collector. While the 1904 double eagle is a very interesting issue on its own, there are many dates which are much scarcer, available for the same price.

The 1899 double eagle is such an issue. The final double eagle struck with the 18xx numerals, this year ended the century in which America grew to a full and strong nation, expanding from coast to coast on the North-American continent (correctly, it ended on December 31, 1900, but that sounds less appealing to us). Double eagle production at the Philadelphia Mint this year was 1,669,300 pieces, most of which were released into circulation. Despite their high value, they did circulate, mostly among banks through out the United States, and like virtually every date of this denomination were used frequently in the trade with overseas nations.

Because of its usage, this is a date that is not as easily available in high grade condition as one might expect. Like many other dates of the same era, this issue is generally available in grades up to MS-63, but gets very scarce in MS-64 and becomes very rare in MS-65. Gem examples trade very infrequently, and at several times the price we presently offer this MS-64 at. This piece displays a very strong strike, with very clean fields and excellent eye-appeal. Original khaki-gold color is seen on both sides, with fresh and brilliant luster on both sides. Attested by CAC for its quality, this is the perfect piece for a high grade type or date set. PCGS have certified 334 1889 double eagles in MS-64, but many must be resubmissions, as only 12 have graded MS-65, with none finer. In all, this is a rare offering of a much underappreciated coin, much rarer than the 1904 but available at nearly the same price.
