1900-S Eagle (1900-S $10) NGC MS64. The $10 gold Eagle was the largest denomination issued under the Mint Act of 1792, but it would be almost 40 years before most citizens would come across the denomination. First minted in 1795, $10 gold Eagles would be subjected to hoarding and melting due to Congress ill conceived 15 to 1 silver/gold ratio. Because of this, gold Eagle production would come to a halt in 1804. In an effort to return the coins to everyday circulation, Congress passed the Act of 1834, changing the silver/gold ratio to 16 to 1. Practically overnight, U.S. silver coins were worth more than the equivalent amount in gold coins.
Gold coins quickly reentered circulation. The price that the U.S paid for gold in relation to silver guaranteed a continuous supply of gold that would last for years.
The $10 Gold piece was designed by Christian Gobrecht and the obverse features a neoclassic head of Liberty adorned with a coronet inscribed LIBERTY . Thirteen stars surround the bust, with the date below. The reverse depicts an eagle holding arrows and an olive branch, encircled by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TEN D. Chief Engraver James Barton Longacre placed the new motto on a scroll over the eagle's head.
The example displayed is truly a spectacular coin with gleaming un-mottled surfaces that reflect light in every direction. Graded MS-64 by NGC, this 1900-S $10 gold Eagle features devices that are struck so well, that they pop off of the coin. A truly brilliant example rich in history, this coin is the perfect example for anyones collection.
