1902 Double Eagle (1902 $20) PCGS MS62. This scarce date double eagle is lustrous on both the obverse and reverse, with highlights in Libertys hair and coronet and the eagles head, wings, and the rays. Many coins of this type show no wear but have a large number of bag marks on Libertys hair and the eagles feathers. Mint state coins that are free of bag marks, such as the present one, are especially valuable.

The Longacre-Barber designed double eagles were minted from 1877 to 1907. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST was added in 1865, at the conclusion of the Civil War. Perhaps it was a time when the country had a need to bring religion more into life in every way because of the ravages of the war. In 1849, gold was discovered in California, and a mechanism was needed to deal with the new ore.

A bill was passed by Congress giving the mint authority to coin double eagles for the first time. James Longacre modified Gobrechts Large Cent Braided Hair Coronets that were issued from 1839. He modified the reverse design by adding a double scroll, which symbolized the denomination of double eagle. He also added a circle of stars and the rays above. Later the motto IN GOD WE TRUST was placed inside a modified circle of stars. The 1902 had a mintage of 31,140, far few than the S mint for this date with its mintage of over a million and three quarters.
