Considered to be among the most beautiful of all American gold series, the double eagles designed by Augustus St. Gaudens saw fluctuating circulation during its time. Mintages fluctuated heavily, and when the end of the series and denomination came close during the 1920s many branch Mint issues were hoarded. When Roosevelt recalled all gold coins, except the pieces with numismatic value, many issues were melted in large number and became extremely rare. Because of these intriguing histories, as well as the true beauty of the design the series has been heavily collected since its mintage.

While the first pieces of the design produced, the ultra high relief pieces, were patterns, the high relief we offered here was offered for circulation. Its details are bold, the result of receiving a minimum of three strikes at the press. This is apparent on both sides, the strike is full, and many details are visible which would not be visible on many subsequent issues for circulation. The later issues were struck using a lower relief, as the Mint had too much trouble striking the coins in acceptable quality. As such, this is a separate type within the series of American coinage.

As previously mentioned, the strike on this particular coin is complete and bold. A deep yellow color, booming luster and no major marks add to the immense eye-appeal of the present offering. The fields are clean, and this coin is of such premium quality that it could easily grade at the gem level. With new Mint products such as the 2009 high relief pieces attracting new collectors, demand sure is to rise again and quality pieces such as this one will become increasingly difficult to acquire.
