1907 $2.50 (1907 Quarter Eagle) NGC MS67. Final year of the Liberty Quarter Eagle type offered here in nearly pristine condition. Seldom offered in such a state of preservation, the fields are nearly flawless, and the strike is strong. No major blemishes are to be noted on either side, and the eye-appeal is excellent, as can be expected for the grade. We believe that this particular issue (in MS-67) has seen many resubmissions at the major grading companies, and thus, this issue might be much scarcer in MS-67 than is generally considered. Only a few MS-68s have been graded by the major grading companies and these are very rarely seen, and even less frequent offered for sale. Without doubt, this coin is a great representative of this type for a type set of United States gold coinage, and a coin which will be very hard to improve on regardless of available funds.
Like most of the circulating coinage introduced in the 1830s and 1840s the Liberty Quarter Eagle was designed by Christian Gobrecht. It shares a common obverse and reverse design with the larger half eagle and eagle denominations while the obverse was also used for the final half cents and large cents. Both of these were discontinued in the 1850s. Gobrecht was also responsible for the Liberty Seated design and it were his designs that would be so prominently visible in commerce in the United States in the 19th century. As this coin can attest his designs would even be struck into the 20th century and without doubt these have put a permanent mark on American coinage.
