1907 Saint Gaudens (1907 $20 St. Gaudens) Double Eagle, NGC MS66. This outstanding 1907 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle shimmers with mint luster throughout its devices. Just a few minor marks on both sides keep this coin from an even higher mint state grade. The strike is above average on both sides with just a touch of weakness in the center of the obverse and the rays of the sun on the reverse. The double eagle is considered by some to be the most beautiful coin of all time and Augustus Saint-Gaudens most famous work. Certainly numismatists feel that the double eagle is his most important work.

On the obverse, Liberty is seen standing facing towards the viewer as the sun rises behind her. She holds a torch, symbol of liberty, in her right hand an olive branch in her left. On her right at the bottom is the Capitol building. LIBERTY is above her head, and she is surrounded by forty-six stars, one for each state in the Union at the time. Saint-Gaudens took the figure of liberty from his statue of Victory, which is part of the Sherman monument in New York City. The reverse of the coin shows a magnificent eagle in flight to the left above the sun. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS form a double arc above it.

At President Roosevelts request, Saint-Gaudens deliberately left off the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Roosevelt felt that it was blasphemous to have the name of God on a coin, considering all of the immoral things that could be bought with money. Because of political pressure, it was added later in 1907 by the Mint Engraver, Charles Barber creating another variety of double eagle.

In its population report NGC shows a total of 9,670 coins certified in all grades; however, there are just 8 better than the present coin.
