1907 $20 Saint Gaudens ( 1907 Saint Gaudens), PCGS MS63. Subdued mint luster illuminates the devices of this mint state 1907 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle. A few marks in the drapery on the obverse and in the suns rays on the reverse keep this coin from a higher mint state grade. The strike is above average on the obverse but shows slight weakness on the suns rays on the reverse. The 1907 No Motto double eagle was the first coin issued that was redone according to Charles Barbers wishes.
Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the original designer, was gravely ill and Theodore Roosevelt was occupied with other matters. Barber was the Mint Engraver in whom President Roosevelt had no confidence when the president asked Saint-Gaudens to design the new coinage. His pet crime was that he would bypass the mundane Barber for a real artist who was capable of transforming the national coinage.
The design that Saint-Gaudens developed was so outstanding that even with the modifications that Barber made as seen in the present coin, the creativity of the artist still is evident. In fact this design, with modifications, is still in use today in the American Eagle Gold bullion program.
