1907 Saint Gaudens (1907 $20 St. Gaudens) PCGS MS64+. This bright and lustrous 1907 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle is just a hair below a gem graded coin. There is a small scrape below Libertys left arm and some wispy marks on both sides that probably keep the coin from the higher grade. By adding a plus to the grade, PCGS has indicated that the coin is superior for the grade assigned. The strike is average with some weakness seen on the Capitol building and the central drapery as well as the suns rays on the reverse.
The 1907 low relief double eagle began the transition from the sculptured high art design of Augustus Saint-Gaudens to commercially acceptable coins that Engraver Charles Barber advocated. The coin is the third type issued in 1907. The first was the Ultra High Relief, which some consider patterns and did not circulate, and the second was the High Relief, Roman Numerals. For the third type, in addition to the relief, the date was also changed from Roman numerals to Arabic numbers, which were more in keeping with the theme of utility. However, the original design is so exceptional that even with these changes it is still considered one of Americas most beautiful coins. The modern Gold American Eagle bullion program uses a modification of the Saint-Gaudens double eagle low relief design, and it has been exceedingly popular with investors as a replacement for the Union of South Africas Krugerrand.
In its population report, PCGS shows 55 1907 low relief double eagles graded MS64+ with 28 better.
