1910-D Eagle (1910-D $10) Indian, NGC MS64+. This satiny eagle shows muted mint luster within the devices. A few tiny marks keep it from a gem grade. NGC gives this coin a 64+, which indicates that it is in the upper range of the 64 grade. The strike is strong on both sides of the coin with every detail easy to observe.

Augustus Saint-Gaudens designed the Indian head eagle. The obverse shows a close up profile of a Caucasian female Liberty facing left. Above her unrealistic war bonnet were thirteen stars in an arc. Below the truncation was the date. Alice Butler was the model for the sculpture. Originally Saint-Gaudens wanted to place a wreath on Libertys head, but President Theodore Roosevelt insisted that it be a feathered war bonnet to give the coin a more nationalistic appeal. The reverse shows a powerful standing eagle that is suggestive of Egyptian art. It shows the eagle standing on a bundle of arrows that resemble fasces. In Roman iconography, fasces symbolized the power to kill or the power of life and death. Held on top of the arrows by the eagles talon is the olive branch, the traditional symbol of peace. Above the eagles head is UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and in the right field is the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST was added to the coins in the series in 1908, despite Roosevelts preference for it being omitted. The denomination TEN DOLLARS is below. On its edge, the coin has forty-six raised stars.

The coin was originally struck in high relief often with a wire edge, which proved to be impractical for banking and commercial purposes. So Engraver Charles Barber remade the coin lowering the relief.
