1912 Indian Head $10 Eagle NGC PF66. Just 83 Proof Indian eagles were produced in 1912, an average number within the Indian Proof Eagle series. However, studies of population data and auction appearances have indicated that this date might be the least available date of this type, in Proof, with no more than twenty-five to thirty examples surviving in all grades. Especially in grades above gem, such as offered here, this is a very rare coin which is only offered on a few occasions each year, regardless of the grade. The only contenders for title of rarest Proof Indian half eagle would be the last years, 1914 and 1915, which had a mintage of just 50 and 75 pieces respectively.
The fields of these rare early 20th century Proof gold come with a number of different finishes and textures. Those of 1912 feature microscopic small facets on the surface, which would be slightly enlarged during the next couple of years, slightly altering the appearance of these pieces. None of these issues, however, come close to the appearance of the Proofs struck during the latter part of the 19th century, showing high reflectivity and frosted devices. The Mint had started to experiment with different finishes, and the Matte Proof finish, like the Roman Finish used in some of the previous year was meant to become popular with collectors at the time.
These collectors, however, largely disliked these pieces and mintages plummeted during the years afterwards. The number of pieces sold was even smaller, and at the end of the year the Mint often melted the pieces that remained unsold, sometimes dozens of examples. Obviously, the number of pieces that are known for this type in the premium gem grades is very small, and any such example, regardless of date should be considered with great care by the advanced type set collector. A key issue, like the 1912 we presently offer, further adds to the desirability of any given coin of this series in high grade.
The premium quality of this PF-66 is undisputed in all aspects. Virtually flawless fields reveal the tiny facets under strong magnification, numbering, according to Breen to millions. Some minor hairlines limit the grade, but these are barely noticeable and do not effect the excellent eye-appeal of this coin. Original and pleasing orange-yellow color is seen on both sides, with no disturbances to be noted. The strike is full and strong, highlighting all the important details of this popular design by one of the most famous artists of the late 19th and early 20th century, Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This coin has been certified by NGC in a new holder.
