1914-D Saint Gaudens Double Eagle (1914-D $20 St. Gaudens) PCGS MS64 CAC. Muted mint luster is found within the devices of this lovely 1914-D Double Eagle. Its grade of MS64 is confirmed by CAC. A few small marks keep it from a gem grade. One is in the right field next to Libertys hip. Another is below her outstretched arm, and a few are on her legs. The reverse also has a few marks, a prominent one behind the eagles head. The strike is full on both sides with every detail observable and clear.
As a result of the Great Recall of 1933-34, a majority of gold coins with dates 1912-1933 were destroyed. Some coins survived this melting because they had been stored in European bank vaults. However, for low mintage coins such as the 1914-D, the percentage of coins that was saved very low since few specimens reached Europe. The result is that when rare specimens are offered, they often are either in circulated condition or have the usual bag marks.
Despite Charles Barbers tinkering with the design, it has retained its appeal over the years. In fact the gold American Eagle bullion program, first issued in 1986, makes use of the design in a somewhat modified form.
