1916 Standing Liberty Quarter (1916 Standing Lib 25C) PCGS VF30. 1916 25c Standing Liberty Quarter, Type 1. The Standing Liberty Quarter designed by Hermon A. McNeil has long been hailed as one of Americas most beautiful coins.
The dramatic images of a statuesque figure of Liberty on the obverse and a flying eagle on the reverse are both patriotic in nature as well as artistically visionary. However, the provocative obverse design proved too progressive for the public and was modified in 1917 to cover Libertys exposed breast. Thus, the Standing Liberty Quarter was issued in two types. Type 1 (1916-1917) and Type 2 (1917-1930).
Within this popular series, the 1916 SLQ reigns supreme. Only the 1918/7-S can approach the demand and popularity of the inaugural issue. As the key to the series, this piece is in constant demand in any grade and any/all pieces in choice condition command a substantial premium.
The fine specimen offered here is spot on solid for the grade. Encapsulated in a new style NGC holder, this well struck piece displays even wear and a lack of notable abrasions or impairments. Dark rim toning can be seen particularly along the rim at the top of the obverse providing lovely contrast to the steel gray surfaces. Choice and pleasing, this excellent key date example is certain to fit nicely into a superior registry set or numismatic portfolio.
