This is one of the most dramatic examples of a doubled-die, in the same category as the 1955 doubled die cents. While those were widely publicized soon after their mintage, the 1916 nickels saw extensive circulation before collectors finally started searching for them. As a result, even coins with the date completely worn away are rare, and always in demand.

This is a problem-free example of the rarest date in the nickel series. No more than 150-175 pieces are sill in existence, with most of them having virtually no sign of the date. While the date is weak on this example, it is still seen. This coin represents a rare opportunity to obtain the key date in the Buffalo Nickel series at a reasonable rate.
