1922 Peace Dollar (1922 Peace $1) NGC MS63 CAC. This lovely Peace Dollar has delightful light reverse toning and an almost white obverse. The center of the coin, the eagles feathers, is light green with a mixture of browns and blue. These fade to yellow and darker blue with red and orange at the rim. Bright iridescent luster shines beneath the toning. In fact the reverse is so pleasing that NGC holdered it reverse out. The obverse is mainly white with very light toning towards the rims, particularly through Liberty. A few hidden contact marks are noted on the reverse under the toning, and a few more are visible on the obverse field, probably accounting for the MS 63 grade. The coin is fully struck on both the obverse and reverse and comes with a CAC sticker indicating that it is solid for the grade.

Farran Zerbe, founder of the Chase Manhattan Money Museum and historian for the ANA, found the eagle on the reverse to be, majestic, intelligent and protective. It is perched on a mound on which is written the word PEACE, hence the name of the design. The coin was originally proposed to be a circulating commemorative. Its reverse was to be emblematic of the crimes against humanity (France, Belgium, and Serbia) that Germany and its allies perpetrated. Later it was to have been a Victory dollar, similar to the Victory postage stamp that was issued in 1919. It is interesting to note that the original reverse design had the eagle breaking a sword on which it was perched. However, some feared criticism that the symbolism would be interpreted as defeat rather than peace so the design was changed, and an olive branch was substituted for the sword.
