1924 Saint Gaudens $20 Error NGC MS63 CAC. This Choice Mint State 1924 Saint-Gaudens double eagle has a struck-thru error in its left obverse field. It is a shallow rough depression at the border. Otherwise, the coin is softly frosted and lustrous. Its surfaces are clean for the grade with no notable abrasion marks or other distractions. The light and dark yellow and orange gold colors confirm the coins originality. The strike is strong with full details on Libertys bosom, the Capitol building and its immediate area, and the feathers of the eagle at the top of the wings. The CAC sticker confirms the grade and indicates that the coin is a premium quality piece.
A strike-thru error takes place when a foreign object gets caught between the die and planchet at the time of striking. While sometimes the foreign object is retained, it often falls away as is the case with the present piece. The Mint is a factory and debris is present as a result of the manufacturing process. If a piece of metal or any foreign object enters the striking chamber, a strike-thru error often results.
Low relief Saint-Gaudens double eagles were first issued in 1907. They continued until 1933, when all gold production stopped. The low relief coins had Arabic numerals for the date instead of the Roman numerals seen on the previous two issues. In 1908, despite President Roosevelts preferences to the contrary, the motto IN GOD WE TRUST was added to the reverse. In 1912 two stars were added to the obverse of the coin to correspond with the new states added to the Union.
Long considered Americas most beautiful coin, even the low relief coins that Charles Barber modified have had lasting beauty and appeal. The modern Gold American Eagle bullion program uses a modification of the Saint-Gaudens double eagle low relief design, and it is exceedingly popular with investors as a replacement for the Union of South Africa Krugerrand.
While the grading services do not provide population numbers for error coins, gold errors, especially double eagles, are rare and always in demand by both gold and error collectors even on common dates such as the present piece.
