1925-D Quarter Eagle Indian (1925 $2.50) NGC MS63. This 1925-D Quarter Eagle Indian shows soft mint luster within the devices and bright centers. The design features are shown to full advantage in this well struck example. A few minor marks on the Indians cheek and a couple in the fields keep this lovely coin from a higher mint state grade.
Like all Indian Head quarter eagles of 1908 to 1929, the design is incuse. All the legends and devices are sunk below the surface of the coin. The designer, Bella Lyon Pratt, a student of Saint-Gaudens, based the reverse on the reverse of Saint-Gaudens eagle, which was similar to Theodore Roosevelts inaugural medal designed by Saint-Gaudens.
The new type quarter eagle was not popular with collectors or the general public who incorrectly felt that germs would collect in the incused portions of the coin.
