1926 Quarter Eagle Indian (1926 $2.50 Indian) NGC MS61 CAC. Shimmering mint luster and originality characterize this Indian Head 1926 Quarter Eagle. The surfaces are slightly abraded and there is a small obverse scratch, which are in keeping with the grade and confirmed by CAC. The strike is strong on both sides so the design is well represented with this piece. Reverse clash marks are noted next to the eagles right leg.
This is a type of mint error that does not detract from the desirability of the coin or its grade. In ancient times incuse coinage was struck, but it had never before been made for circulating United States coins. The design and new relief immediately made the coins in this series (and the half eagle series) very different from those that preceded them. The devices on the coin are sunk below the fields so the high points are protected. However, because there are no protective raised rims, the fields very easily show wear.
The new design concept immediately came under attack when the coins were released because they allegedly were easily counterfeited, could not be stacked, and were supposedly unhygienic.
