1926 Sesqui $2.50 (1926 Sesquicentennial ) PCGS MS66. This outstanding commemorative 1926 Quarter Eagle has extremely clean surfaces, as expected for a coin of this high mint state grade with none of the handling and contact marks usually seen on this issue. It is fully lustrous and frosty, looking as fresh as the day it came from the mint. While struck in low relief, the coins design features are nonetheless evident.

The coin designed by Chief Engraver John R. Sinnock shows Liberty standing on a globe, holding a large torch in her right hand. She wears a long gown and there is drapery over her left shoulder and part of her right arm. There is a scroll in her left hand which represents the Declaration of Independence. The inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is in an arc at the top interrupted by Libertys head. The date 1776 is in the lower left field and 1926 is in the mid right field. Below the figure at the edge is LIBERTY, the E of which is on top of the globe next to Libertys foot. The reverse shows Independence Hall. The inscription around the top is SESQUICENTENNIAL OF AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE with the denomination 2 DOLLARS below. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST is on either side of the tower, while E PLURIBUS UNUM is blow the building.

The 1926 Sesquicentennial quarter eagle and a silver half dollar were minted to commemorate the 150th anniversary of American independence. It was issued by the National Sesquicentennial Exhibition Association in Philadelphia. While 200,000 coins were authorized, 154,207 were melted because of the indifference of the general public. The Exposition itself was a financial failure as were sales of both commemorative coins.

This issue was the last commemorative gold coin to be made until 1984. It was the second commemorative quarter eagle of the twentieth century.

In Mint State 66 the 1926 Sesquicentennial quarter eagle is a condition rarity. In its population report, PCGS shows that with almost 11,000 coins graded by the service, 124 are graded MS66 with none better.
