1927 $20 Saint Gaudens PCGS MS65. Glowing mint luster and original surfaces characterized this gem 1927 St. Gaudens Double Eagle. Just a couple of very tiny, minor ticks and scrapes on both sides keep this lovely coin from an even higher mint state grade. The strike is average on the obverse and somewhat stronger on the reverse.
When President Theodore Roosevelt saw the first double eagles, he knew that a masterpiece had been created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. What he could not have known at the time was that his cousin Franklin Delano Roosevelt would recall all privately owned gold including many of the Saint-Gaudens twenties.
In 1912 two stars were added to the obverse of the double eagle bringing the total to forty-eight, which corresponded to the number of states in the Union at the time. After this change, the coin remained unchanged through its last mintage in 1933.
With its mintage of 2,946,750, the 1927 double eagle is not a rare coin; however, as a Saint-Gaudens in gem condition, it is very desirable both as a type coin and as an investment piece.
