1934-D Oregon 50C PCGS MS63 CAC. This frosty white, 1934-D Oregon Trail Half is filled with blazing mint luster. The mint state grade is confirmed by CAC, and the strike is above average. Typical weakness is seen on the thumb and index finger holding the bow.
The coin designed by James and Laura Fraser, shows an Indian brave on its obverse with hand extended as if saying you may go no further. The reverse shows a pioneer family in a Conestoga wagon going to the West. It is interesting to note that to the West meant to the left as if the viewer were south of the wagon. Of course if the viewer were to the north, the West would have been to the right. However, James Fraser chose left because that is the typical orientation of a map with north at the top.
Over time the promoters of the issue assigned special names to certain dates. The 1934-D was called the Fort Hall, Fort Laramie, and Jason Lee coin (Lee was a missionary).
