1938 Half Dollar (1938 50C) New Rochelle NGC MS66 CAC. This lightly toned New Rochelle Half Dollar is bright and lustrous. The obverse shows gold and yellow toning in the upper left near the edge. The reverse has more peripheral toning with colors of gold, yellow, green and russet. The coin is graded MS66, which is confirmed by CAC. A couple of very small marks in the fields keep this coin from an even higher grade. The strike is strong on the obverse and above average on the reverse, which shows slight central weakness.
The coin, designed by Gertrude Lathrop, was struck to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the city of New Rochelle, New York. The city was founded by the French Huguenots in 1688. When the Huguenots bought the land from John Pell, one of the provisions of the agreement was that a calf be given away annually on June 20th, hence the obverse device.
