1945-S 5C Mint Error PCGS AU58. 1945-S Jefferson 5c Struck on 3.3 gram Silver Planchet, Mint Error. Error coins are one of the more fascinating and rewarding areas of numismatics that one can pursue. With millions and even billions of pieces produced each year by the United States Mint, a myriad of different types of errors can occur. While some of these are subtle and rather ordinary, many are dramatic and extremely rare.

The piece seen here is of the latter variety. This extremely interesting type of error is considered a wrong planchet error. According to the 2010 A Guide Book to United States Coins (commonly referred to as The Red Book), this type of error occurs when a coin is struck on a planchet intended for another denomination or of the wrong metal. The rare error piece offered here is quite unique and alluring.

A five cent Jefferson nickel design has been struck onto a 3.3 grams silver planchet. The standard weight for the silver composition war nickel was 5 grams so this piece is smaller and did not allow for the full design to be transferred from the dies. Despite this, the devices are well centered and bold. Extremely light touches of wear account for the super slider grade but do not detract from the terrific eye appeal that this coin possesses. This is a very cool error from the final year of World War II that will enhance a superior error collection or serve as a fantastic conversation piece and memento from a tumultuous period in world history.
