1947 C.SMITH SC50C CONFEDERATE SEAL, NGC MS66. (1947) C. Smith, Confederate Seal, So-Called 50C NGC MS66.  This C. Smith So-Called half dollar is in Superb Gem condition. The white piece is a mixture of light sliver and gun-metal gray and is fully lustrous. The colors and luster affirm the pieces originality. The devices and legends are well struck and show full details. The surfaces are especially clean with no visible abrasion marks or other distractions. The vertical striations on both sides are mint-made.

The piece, a So-Called half dollar, is a souvenir token not a coin. The obverse shows the Great Seal of the Confederate States of America. In its center is George Washington mounted in the same position as the 1858 Virginia Washington Monument, which is located adjacent to the Confederate Capitol in Richmond, Virginia. Washington is pictured in his uniform of the Revolution securing American independence, within an open wreath of wheat, corn, tobacco, cotton, rice, and sugar cane. Below the horse is the date FEB. 22, 1862. This date commemorates the establishment of the government of the Confederate States, was the date of the inauguration of Jefferson Davis, and is also George Washingtons birthday. The bottom margin contains the national motto, Deo Vindice (variously translated as "Under God, [Our] Vindicator", "With God as [Our] Champion", "With God as [Our] Judge", and "Under the Guidance and Protection of God").

The reverse shows the Confederate Seal, which shares the inscription CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA with the denomination below. The central device shows a liberty cap atop a Confederate shield within an open wreath. This reverse is the same as on the Confederate half dollars of 1861 which were restruck by Bashlow and later by Scott.

C. Smith also made So-Called half dollars for the 1947 Pony Express Diamond Jubilee in brass, silver, and nickel.
