1953(A) South Vietnam 10 SU - 1953A S.Vietnam 10SU NGC MS63, KM # 1. This Mint State 1953 10 SU coin from South Vietnam is struck in aluminum. The lustrous piece is well struck with full details on the three portraits, the legends, and the rice plant. A few light abrasions keep this piece from a higher Mint State grade. The surfaces are original and have no individual marks that are worthy of description.
The obverse shows the conjoined busts of three women facing to the left. Each woman represents one of the three regions of Vietnam. From left to right, the first woman is from the south of Vietnam, the middle one is from Hue, and the woman on the right is from the north of Vietnam. Above them is the legend QUOC-GIA VIET-NAM (State of Vietnam) with the date below. The date is one year before the demise of the French at Dien Bien Phu, which effectively ended French colonial rule in Indochina. The reverse shows a common rice plant (oryza sativa) dividing the denomination with 10 on the left of the plant, and SU on the right.
Aluminum coins are subject to corrosion and pitting unless encapsulated in a protective holder such as one from NGC or PCGS. Since most were not properly saved, quality Uncirculated specimens are scarce and even rare. Here is an excellent opportunity to acquire an historic piece at a reasonable price.
