1955 Franklin Half Dollar (1955 Franklin 50C) PCGS PF66 CAM CAC. This lovely proof cameo 1955 Half Dollar shows light toning in the upper left obverse field and very light toning on the left side of the reverse near the edge. The cameo contrast is strong on both sides. The strike, as expected for a proof coin, is sharp and clear. The grade of Proof 66 Cameo is confirmed by its CAC sticker. Designed by John R. Sinnock, the models for the new half were completed a few weeks before his death in 1947. Nellie Tayloe Ross, the first woman governor of a state (Wyoming) and the first female Mint Director disapproved of the design because the eagle was too small and the bells crack was prominent. Nonetheless, the design was approved and the coin was minted in 1948.
Unlike todays proofs that are almost all high contrast cameos, the cameo proofs of the 1950s were the first few struck proof coins for the die. The dies were not especially polished to bring out the contrast so relatively few cameos were made.
