1956 Franklin Half Dollar (1956 Franklin 50C) PCGS PR67 CAMEO CAC. This eye-appealing cameo proof 1956 Franklin Half Dollar Type 2 shows black and white contrast on both sides with the reverse being stronger than the obverse. There is very light toning around the periphery of the obverse especially at the top of Franklins head. The reverse shows somewhat darker toning in the letters of the legend. The grade of Proof 67 Cameo is confirmed by the CAC sticker and, as expected for a proof coin of this grade, the strike is sharp and clear. In 1956 the relief of the eagle was raised creating the Type 2, which was used for proofs in this year. Some subsequent years used both types 1 and 2 for business strikes.
When first released the design was controversial because some followers of Senator Joseph McCarthy mistook designer Joseph Sinnocks initials for those of Russian leader Joseph Stalin. Of course outraged officials denied any connection to Stalin.
