1956 Franklin Half Dollar (1956 Franklin 50C) PCGS PR68 CAMEO CAC. Outstanding mirrored contrast typifies this superb proof 1956 Franklin Half Dollar Type 2. Both sides are black and white with just a trace of toning above STATES OF AMERICA near the edge. None of the haze that sometimes is seen on the proofs of this series is evident. The grade of Proof 68 Cameo is confirmed with a CAC sticker.
As expected the strike is sharp and clear on both sides with every detail easily observable. In 1926 John Sinnock designed the Liberty Bell motif for the commemorative coin of the sesquicentennial of the United States; however, Sinnock did not give credit to John Frederick Lewis, from whom he copied the design. The reverse of the Franklin half was based on the earlier commemorative coin. Most references belatedly now credit Lewis for his earlier work.
When first issued, some thought the new half dollar would have to be recalled because of a design flaw. The small o in oF was clearly a mistake, and early coins were hoarded. However, when the coins were not recalled and the public was reassured that there was no mistake, many were put into circulation.
