1956 Quarter Dollar - 1956 25C ANACS MS65. 1956 25C, Type B reverse. This 1956 Type B reverse quarter is lightly toned and fully lustrous. Since the issue was made with low relief, the coin is fully struck although not apparently so. The Type B reverse was used on proof issues as well as business strikes, and the relief is slightly higher than on the obverse. The surfaces are original and clean for the grade with no distraction worthy of individual mention.
John Flanagan designed the Washington quarter. It shows a profile bust of Washington facing left. At the top is LIBERTY with the date below the truncation. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST is in the left field below Washingtons chin. The reverse shows an eagle with outstretched wings standing on a bundle of arrows that resemble fasces. Above the eagles head in two lines is the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. At the top edge of the coin is the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Under the arrows are crossed olive branches curving upward and over the wings. At the bottom edge is the denomination written as QUARTER DOLLAR.
Technically speaking the 1956 quarter with a Type B reverse is an error coin known as a mule. The reverse die that was used was originally made for proof coinage. Unlike on the Type A reverse die, the E and S of STATES are apart, and the leaf point extends above the arrow point.
