The coin shows a bust of Pulaski in profile facing left. He is surrounded by his name with his dates, 1747-1779, below. The reverse shows an Imperial eagle separating the date. The inscription POLSKA PZECZPOSPOLITA LUDOWA, or The Peoples Republic of Poland surrounds with the denomination below.
Pulaski was a nobleman, soldier, and military commander who has been called the father of the American cavalry. His early interest in politics led him to a military career. He fought against Russian domination of the Polish Commonwealth. When the uprising failed, Benjamin Franklin endorsed his immigration to America to help in the cause of the Revolution. He saved George Washingtons life and became a general in the Continental Army. He was mortally wounded in the Battle of Savannah while leading a charge against the British. Remembered as a hero for freedom, he is one of only seven who were awarded honorary United States citizenship.
