1987 MW Poland, Silver 10KZ, Papal Visit to America, KM # Y-164, NGC MS64. Light blue-gray and silver and teal mix on this lovely Polish commemorative coin from 1987. The 10,000Z piece commemorates the visit of Pope John II to the United States. The coin is original and clean for the grade with no notable abrasion marks or other distractions. The strike is strong with full details on both sides in evidence.
The obverse depicts the Pope facing three-quarters to the left as he holds up his hand in blessing. His name is inscribed at the edge in the upper left field. The reverse shows an Imperial eagle separating the date. The inscription POLSKA PZECZPOSPOLITA LUDOWA, or The Peoples Republic of Poland surrounds with the denomination below.
John Paul II was the first Pope to visit the United States. He met privately with Jimmy Carter in the Oval Office. He also spent time in New York and Chicago where he celebrated Mass. Chicago was the largest Catholic archdiocese in the United States at the time and the home of the largest Polish community outside of Poland.
