1802
Half Dollar - The 1802
Half Dollar is a difficult coin to find, especially
in XF condition or finer. For years, and maybe for
generations, collectors felt that they could by a
coin of this date anytime one was needed. Maybe that
was true a long time ago but not anymore. Most collector
coins remain in “strong hands,” that is,
in collections for many years and seldom become available
on the market. Even impaired specimens attract bidders’
attention at auctions.
With a mintage of
29,890, the 1802
Half Dollar has the lowest mintage of the Draped
Bust, Large Eagle series. NGC has certified 88 coins
in all conditions, and PCGS has 183. These numbers
do not account for crossovers or resubmissions.
