Half Dollar - The 1803
Half Dollar is found with either a Large or Small
3 in the date. The Large 3 is more common and is seen
about five times more often than the Small 3. The
Large 3 has a vertical serif which is at a right angle
to the top bar of the numeral and extends above it.
The top bar and serif are also thicker. On the Small
3 the serif slants to the left. In addition, the 1803
also comes with Large and Small reverse stars.
The 1803
Half Dollar had an original mintage of 188,234,
which includes all varieties. PCGS has certified 421
Large 3 coins and 77 Small 3’s. NGC has certified
90 Large and 33 Small 3’s. These numbers do
not account for resubmissions and crossovers.
