1805
Half Dollar - The 1805
Half Dollar has two main varieties, the Normal
Date and the Overdate, 5 over 4. Since there are no
1804 half dollars, it is assumed that the dies for
1804 were unused and simply over stamped with a 5
for the next year. Two different dies have overdates,
and both of them have the 4’s clearly visible
under the 5 without magnification. All of the Overdate
1805/4 half dollars are scarce, and one variety (Overton
103) is rare. The Overdates are approximately two
or three times rarer than the Normal Date. All Mint
state 1805 half dollars are exceedingly rare regardless
of variety.
The 1805 half
dollar had a mintage of 211,722. In its population
report, NGC shows a total of 321 Normal Dates and
97 Overdates. PCGS has 463 Normal Dates and 174 Overdates.
These numbers do not account for resubmissions and
crossovers.
