1798 Early Silver Dollar (1798 Early $1) BB-120 B-12,Large Eagle, PCGS XF45. This evenly toned 1798 Silver Dollar is characterized by excellent surfaces and a minimum of wear. It shows shades of light and dark tan, yellow-gold, blue, green, and russet. There is a darker spot of blue toning on Libertys neck. All of the lines in the drapery on Libertys bust show distinctly, and the hair is outlined and detailed, in keeping with the grade. The strike on the obverse is strong. The reverse shows weakness on the motto, the eagles head, and the stars.
The Draped Bust dollar obverse was designed by Robert Scot based on a drawing by the noted artist Gilbert Stuart. The young country wanted to elevate its coinage designs to compete with Europes finest. The earlier Flowing Hair Liberty was changed to a more matronly effigy. They young eagle seen on the earlier reverse was replaced by an older heraldic eagle. In fact 1798 was the last year of the small eagle reverse and first year of the large eagle. However, in an oversight the arrows were placed in the eagles right talon, leaving the olive branch in the left. This warlike placement of the arrows was repeated on all heraldic eagle coins of the time.
