1839
Quarter Eagle - 1839 Classic Quarter Eagle. The 1839 quarter
eagle, the last year of the Classic Head type, had a mintage
of 27,021; however, it has been recognized as one of the more
difficult dates in the series to obtain. All issues were struck
from the same die pair which had a defective punch. Some of
have been certified as overdates.
PCGS has 81 certified with 1 in MS61 and
2 in MS62 with none higher. NGC has 73 in total with 8 in
mint state, the highest being MS63. Only 3 or 4 proofs are
known. PCGS has 1 in PF62 and 1 in PRCA 62. NGC has 2 Specimen
62 examples. There are none in the Smithsonian collection.
