Gold Dollar- The 1857
Gold Dollar is common is most grades. Almost three dozen
have been certified in Gem and better grades by both major
grading services including one in MS68 that was certified
by PCGS. In 1983 a small hoard of better graded pieces was
placed on the market and quickly sold.
In 1857 the Supreme Court ruled 7 to 2 in
Dred Scott v. Sandford that blacks were not citizens of
the United States and could not bring suit in a court of
law. The Dred Scott Decision held that blacks who were brought
here as slaves or their descendents were not protected by
the Constitution. This decision was contrary to the practice
in many of the Free states at the time. The Court also ruled
that slaves could not be taken away from their owners without
due process.
