1857-C
Gold Dollar - All 1857-C
Gold Dollar coins were poorly made. Most are softly struck
with planchet flaws. Only 9 have been graded in Mint State
by both PCGS and NGC combined with none higher than 2 MS62
examples. Because of the poor quality of coins of this date
and mint, surface condition and luster are the principal
considerations used in grading.
The Utah War also known as the Mormon War
was a confrontation between Mormons and the United States
government. It took place from May 1857 to July 1858. While
there were some non-Mormon casualties, the conflict had
no battles and ended through negotiation. More than 120
settlers that were bound for California from Arkansas and
Missouri were killed by a group of Mormon militiamen. They
deliberately lied and claimed that the settlers were killed
by Indians. In the end, negotiations resulted in a full
pardon for the Mormons, the change of Utah’s governor
from Brigham Young to Alfred Cumming, a non-Mormon, and
the peaceful access to Utah by the Army of the United States.
