1858-S
Gold Dollar - The 1858-S Gold Dollar had a
mintage exactly the same as the previous year’s San
Francisco output. It is similar in rarity to the 1857-S
piece too.
Only 10 pieces have been certified in Mint
State by NGC. Ten have also been certified by PCGS, but
one of these is an MS65 that was part of the Harry W. Bass
Jr. collection.
Seven debates took place between Lincoln
and Stephen A. Douglas in 1858. At that time United States
senators were elected by their state legislatures.
Both Lincoln for the Republicans and Douglas
for the Democrats were trying toget
their parties to win control of the Illinois state legislature.
These debates previewed issues that would be raised in the
1860 presidential election, the principal issue of which
was slavery.
