Gold Dollar - The 1859-D Gold Dollar has 14
examples certified above MS62 by NGC and PCGS combined.
Most often it is seen in AU grades. The central portions
are often weakly struck with the middle numerals of the
date sometimes missing entirely.
In 1859 Georgia and Arkansas passed laws
that forbade slave owners from freeing their slaves. The
owner was obligated to support a slave during his lifetime.
One purpose of the legislation was to prevent a slave owner
from evading his duty to support his slaves under the guise
of humanitarianism.
