1860
Gold Dollar - The 1860 Gold Dollar is especially rare
in gem grades and above. Fifteen pieces have been certified
by both grading services in MS65 and above. Most pieces
are well struck with good luster and often with clashed
dies.
Sometimes letters from LIBERTY are found
on the coin’s reverse because of the clashing. The
same date punch for the three-cent silver was used for this
coin.
In 1860 the Pony Express was founded. It
was a fast mail service from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento,
California. Before the telegraph, it was the most direct
means of communication just before the Civil War. Horseback
riders in relays carried the mail to stations with fresh
horses and riders. It operated for eighteen months.
