1860
Gold Dollar - The 1860-D Gold Dollar had a
very small mintage of 1,566 pieces. It was poorly produced
with uneven strikes and low quality planchets. The U of
UNITED is missing on almost all pieces. The N is often weak
or missing too. Most are in circulated condition with 22
certified in Mint State by both grading services.
In 1860 the Crittenden Compromise was proposed.
Its purpose was to resolve the secession crisis by addressing
the grievances of the slave states. It proposed constitutional
amendments and resolutions to make permanent the existence
of slavery in the slave states and proposed extending the
Missouri Compromise line to the west.
It included a clause that it could not be
repealed or amended. It was rejected by both houses of congress
and did not forestall secession.
