J-1102 1871 25C (J-1102, high R-7) NGC PF-68RB CAM* - Regular seated quarter dies of the year, but struck in copper instead of silver. This wonderful die trail is absolute the finest known for this variety and fresh on the market as well. According to uspatterns.com only 3 or 4 examples exist, and Pollock has listed 4 or 5 examples at most. Whatever the correct number is, this is a true rarity and a rare offering as such.

According to the major numismatic references, die trails are pieces struck to set up the dies before striking regular coinage. However, the large number of varieties known, and the fact that they are almost always of the same quality as regular Proof coinage, make that situation unusual and probably not true. Most likely, the majority of all known die trails were struck at the United States Mint for special sale to collectors of the time, who created the market for them. For instance, for some years there are complete sets known in copper and aluminum, instead of regular bronze, silver and copper. These were and are highly valued, although most sets have long been broken sets and full and complete sets are extremely rare with only a few examples still known to exist.

Collecting these so-called die trails makes for a very exciting challenge. As with the present coin offered here, many varieties are extremely rare and even unique. This is especially the case with the larger and gold denominations, although there are a few exceptions for some years. Especially during the early 1870s, it is known that certain issues (for example half dime issues from the 1860s) were restruck in copper for the exclusive sale to collectors. Because of this, some varieties are more available than others.

This rare die-trail offered here is of exceptional quality. This is not only confirmed by the grade NGC awarded to it, it can also be clearly seen when the coin is viewed in hand. Deeply mirrored fields show under subdued toning, which changes to a gorgeous electric-blue amidst a sea of original Mint red and brown color. The devices are all sharply struck, highlighting the overall eye-appeal of this particular design, with frosted motives that account for the rare Cameo designation. No blemishes are seen on either side, except for a few tiny hairlines that are only discovered under strong magnification. A wonderful coin, worthy of inclusion in the finest Seated quarter or pattern set.
