1871 50C (J-1115, low R-7) NGC PF-64RB A wonderful example of Longacres Indian Princess design, as executed by Chief Engraver William Barber. Generally considered to be one of the highlights of American pattern designs, many different varieties were struck, with the larger denomination such as the half dollar pieces among the more popular. This is the with stars design, identified by the 13 stars surrounding the Indian Princess. The reverse is that of a regular half dollar die of the year, and the coin is struck in copper with a reeded edge.
These pieces, presumably fantasy pieces struck for sale to collectors of the time, are very popular in modern numismatists. Although not patterns in the strictest sense, they are collected and highly prized as such. Of this issue, approximately 8 examples are known in all grades, and as can be guessed examples are scarce in all grades. On the present piece, parts of the original Mint red color are still remaining, adding to the overall desirability of this premium quality pattern.
Copper-orange color is seen on both sides of the coin, which shows great reflectivity when tilted. Only the slightest specks account for the limited grade, although they do not distract and are barely visible in hand. Sharply struck, the impression is very good, adding to the further desirability of this rare opportunity. This is a great coin for the specialist of pattern coinage, or for anyone seeking a wonderful example of a famous and storied pattern.
