J-1714 1883 5C NGC PF65 CAC. R-6- A gem survivor of this scarce pattern for the Liberty nickel. Struck on a regular Nickel planchet of the year, with wonderful eye-appeal. Part of a series of patterns struck during the early 1880s to replace the old Nickel design introduced with the denomination in 1866. Collecting this series has become more popular in recent times, and as a result prices have increased following demand. However, with more people focusing on patterns this piece should still be a very good investment.
Designed by Charles E. Barber, only the obverse is different from the regular die of the year. The word LIBERTY on the coronet is absent on this pattern, but is placed above the head of Liberty instead. Because of this, the stars are rearranged as well which is very obvious with a 6 left and 7 right configuration. The date is in the same position as the coins struck for circulation, apparently after this design was disapproved. The reverse die is that of the regular no-cents subtype of the year.
This is a wonderful gem survivor, with semi-mirrored fields. The devices are moderately frosted, still obtaining a very nice effect. All details are boldly struck, including all of Libertys hair on the obverse and the center leaves on the reverse. No distracting marks of any note are visible on either side, making this a piece of premium quality. This coin has recently been certified by NGC in a new holder.
