J-245 1859 50C NGC PF64 CAC. R-6+. J-245 1859 50c NGC PF64, CAC, R-6+. The obverse of this extremely rare pattern was designed by Chief Mint Engraver James B. Longacre and was known as the French Liberty Head design. The reverse was created by Assistant Mint Engraver Anthony Paquet with the key feature being a broken ribbon held in the eagles beak. There are two major varieties known. One has a perfect ribbon (Pollock-301) and the other has a weak ribbon (Pollock-303) on the reverse. However, in the authoritative work The Ninth Edition of United States Pattern Coins, these varieties are both grouped together under Judd-245.
On the example offered here, a pleasant dark patina conceals rich blue tones. Of note, the reverse displays the weaker strike of the Pollock-303 variety which is not wear but rather a characteristic inherent of the striking. Overall, this is a charming piece that approaches gem status as evidenced by the CAC approval sticker. This pattern would make a fine inclusion in any high end rare coin collection.
