J450 1865 Ten Dollar $10 PCGS PF64 BN. R-6+ Transitional Copper $10, Civil War Date. J-450 1865 $10. This transitional pattern has a coolness factor of 10+!! Struck in copper with a reeded edge, this piece utilizes the ten dollar obverse design of 1865 and pairs it with the reverse featuring In God We Trust that would be employed in 1866. Therefore, not only is this pattern a ten dollar gold eagle design produced in copper but it also features a Civil War date.
It is estimated that only 15 examples of this pattern were struck in copper. As an aside, two examples are known to have been struck in gold. One of these was part of the famed King Farouk collection while the other resides in the Smithsonian Institution. With a total of just 6 graded at PCGS with 2 in grade and 0 higher, this is a top pop piece.
The specimen offered here is remarkably absent of distractions and exhibits rich chocolate brown tones. The devices are extremely detailed and well struck and the piece overall has a very original and wholesome appearance. This truly is a lovely piece destined to be the centerpiece in an elite numismatic collection.
