J-811 (J811) 1870 5C NGC PF65 BN. R-7- Copper Half Dime. J-811 1870 Half 10c. This extremely rare pattern features William Barbers rendition of Liberty seated and facing left. Her right hand holds a shield with LIBERTY across it while her left hand holds an olive branch. A pole with a cap atop it is to the left. The date and the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA are located along the rims. The reverse design features the word STANDARD above a wreath encircling 5 CENTS.
Struck in copper with a reeded edge, it is estimated by J. Hewitt Judd, M.D. in his authoritative work The Official Red Book of United States Pattern Coins that only 7 of these exist making this an exceptionally rare numismatic piece. Furthermore, this top pop pattern is one of only 3 certified by NGC as PF65 BN with none higher.
This specimen is wonderfully struck with razor sharp detail evident in the devices. The fields, notably absent of impairments and abrasions, exhibit gorgeous deep brown and chocolate tones. Overall this magnificent rarity has remarkable eye appeal in hand and will fit nicely into an elite rare coin portfolio.
