J-887 1870 25C PCGS PF66 CAC, R-7+. This attractive J887 1870 25C PCGS PF66 CAC piece is certainly deserving of high status among the ultra rarities found in the area of United States pattern coins. The obverse was designed by Chief Mint Engraver William Barber who had succeeded James B. Longacre in that position. The reverse of this coin features Christian Gobrechts design as employed at the time on the reverse of the Seated Liberty Quarter.
The specimen offered here is an elusive, top pop piece, with a total certified population of just 3 at PCGS and 0 at NGC. Of that number, only one other piece has been assigned this grade with NONE higher. Furthermore, this is the lone example to receive CAC approval to date. Well struck on an aluminum planchet with a plain edge, the detail is sharp and well defined. For the discerning collector/investor seeking rarity as well as beauty, this pattern is a superior opportunity.
