J-A1840 DT10C 1840 PCGS MS62. R-8. Uniface die trial (obverse) from drapery dies tooled off to create a No Drapery prototype! 1840 Die Trail 10C (J-A1840-2, unique). Although listed in previous auctions and references as being R-8, with two pieces known this piece appears to be the single one known of this obverse die trail. A rumored copy was supposed to be in the Library Company of Philadelphia, but none have turned up there in recent times. Seldom offered as such, making this a rare opportunity for the Seated coinage or pattern specialist.

Struck in white metal, this one-sided die trail as a few interesting factors. First of all, for the past 169 years it has carefully been preserved, which is quite an accomplishment. The so-called white-metal composition is extremely vulnerable, often breaking even when handled carefully. As such, this piece is already a rarity on that part.

Secondly, this die trail was first struck using one of the new obverse dies showing drapery from Libertys elbow. Although it can not be confirmed, some researchers (including the author) believe that it was Chief Engraver Christian Gobrecht himself who scraped off the drapery after it was struck. Apparently, Gobrecht was trying to figure out if he liked the with drapery or no drapery design better. Although both designs also differ on other factors, the drapery is the most identifiable indicator.

Listed and plated in both the Judd and Pollock texts, this is an extremely rare die trail that most likely will stay unique forever. Although the grade is totally irrelevant on unique pieces, this piece appears to be free of any distracting marks. The obverse has moderate luster, and the strike is especially bold for a die trail. The reverse is blank, and has no marks or indications of any sort. A great coin for the specialist plated in the major references and destined to rise in value over the next few years.
